Time Management Tips for Sales Managers
Time Management Tips for Sales ManagersTime Management Tips for Sales ManagersThe most frequent complaint of sales management is that therbeies never enough time to get everything done. Many sales managers work sixty or even seventy hours a week, yet their inboxes are always overflowing with urgent tasks. If this is your situation, you may need to take a look at how you use time management. As a sales manager, the lions share of your time should be spent managing your salespeople. This sounds obvious, yet sales managers often get caught up in other projects- whether its an urgently needed report to the CEO, a series of meetings with company executives, or defining requirements for a new CRM platform. fruchtwein of these tasks are one-time events, but no sooner have you completed each project than the next project appears on your desk. If you are drowning in a sea of paperwork, then your manager may be in need of a wake-up call. Most companies generate far more reports and other admin istrative documentation than they need. Working with your sales executives, you can probably identify several non-critical processes and remove them from your life. Just slashing your paperwork can make a huge difference in your available time at the office. Meetings Meetings are another potential time-waster. If, like most sales managers, you have a weekly Monday team meeting, ask yourself whether you need to spend all those hours on a team meeting every month. Can you switch to a meeting every other week instead? If not, can you cut down on time spent during the meeting by delegating tasks to individuals instead of discussing them endlessly within the group? Other types of meetings may be avoided by sending a delegate who will report back to you or by requesting that your presence is omitted altogether if you feel your contribution isnt necessary. Your manager may be costing you a great deal of your time by sending a series of time critical projects your way. In this case, try explaining to her that your team is suffering from the time you spend working on these projects and ask if some of them can be handled by others or simply deferred. If she persists on sending you projects even after shes agreed to cut back, you may be able to push back by saying something like, I had scheduled my afternoon to go with George and Linda for their presentation to close a big deal with Company X. Should I prioritize your project ahead of that? Your boss may suddenly realize that her task isnt quite so urgent after all. If you find that you still have more tasks than you have hours in the day, be ruthless about how you prioritize them. The three most crucial sales management tasks are sales planning, training and coaching your salespeople (which includes helping with stalled deals and other one-time sales problems). Activities related to any of these three areas should come first in your daily scheduling, even if that means that another task ends up being delayed an ext ra few days. Time Tracking One way to help keep yourself on track is to schedule your core management functions well in advance and then treat those times as sacred. For example, you might decide that every Wednesday and Thursday afternoon from 2 PM to 3 PM you will sit down with one of your salespeople and go over their recent performance. In that case, nothing short of a major disaster should cause you to reschedule this time. It may be difficult at first, but watching your teams sales take off in response to your efforts will dull the pain quickly enough.

How to Create a Career Development Plan
How to Create a Career Development PlanHow to Create a Career Development PlanNot sure whats next for you at work? Creating a career development plan will help put you on the path to establishing and meeting your professional goals.Whether youre content or dissatisfied in your current job, your career development is something you need to be in control of - not something thats just happening to you. So its important to look ahead, even if you feel theres not a lot you would change about your current situation in the short term. Here are six tips for devising a career development plan that will put you in the drivers seat as you navigate your next professional move.1. Think about your destination - and the journeyWhen it comes to career development, you need to think about both the short term and the long term. Where do you want to be in one, two, five, 10 years? While your long-term goal may be harder to visualize, you should be able to clearly define your vision for the next few ye ars. Dont let obstacles stand in your way if they could be overcome by working hard or taking classes. For instance, if you work primarily in print design right now but hope to become a UX designer, thats likely a goal you can achieve - but you need a solid plan.2. Research the positions that appeal to youAre you romanticizing making a move into, say, copywriting? Before you start pursuing your dream job, make sure you really understand what that job entails. Talk to a person currently working in that position to find out about their responsibilities and the various skills required of someone in such a role. Check out job listings for that position to see what qualifications companies are seeking. Finally, talk to a mentor, a career coach or your manager to get another perspective on the position and whether or not they think it would be a good fit for you.3. Conduct a skills assessment/gap analysisBefore you develop a timeline for achieving your end goal, youll need to assess your current skill set and determine where it does - and does not - align with the job you want. If you have most of the skills youll need, you may be able to start a job search or talk to your manager about a promotion soon. But if you need to build additional skills on the job or attend classes, youll want to add that to your career development plan.4. Make plans to obtain the skills and experience you needIf you want to be a strong candidate when making a job transition or seeking a promotion, youll likely need a mix of training and real-world experience. Now is the time to research training options and ask your manager for responsibilities that will move you along the path youve mapped out. For example, if youre a designer who aspires to work as an interactive creative director, you may need additional business classes, technical training or experience working face-to-face with clients and managing employees.5. platzset target dates for each milestoneIf you need to take a series o f classes, create a timeline for completing each one based on where and when theyre offered. If you need to ask for more responsibility at your current job before you can move to the next level (see No. 4 above), identify the right time to meet with your manager, whether its your next performance review or a standalone meeting. Together, you can establish target dates for stepping up your responsibilities.6. Hold yourself accountableCreating a plan is wasted time if youre not committed to sticking to it. Build in accountability by putting check-in dates on your calendar so you can assess your progress and make adjustments to your career development plan - or even your goals - if necessary. And dont get discouraged if you get off course. Its better to stretch your timeline and keep working toward your goal than to let it fall by the wayside because youve failed to accomplish something in the time you initially allotted. And its OK if your plans change. The important thing is that yo uve taken control of your career development and started looking ahead.Subscribe to the blog for more career tips

learn to code
learn to code Learning new skills can be frustrating. The natural ups and downs on the path to progress can cause learners to become stuck, encounter mental blocks, or even give up altogether. As a former college professor in the field of education, I can say with certainty, a little knowledge about educational psychology goes a long way when you want to be a successful student of code. With a few tips, you can take charge of your learning and persevere.tischset Reasonable GoalsClever marketing will make you think you can learn Python in a day or JavaScript in a week. The truth is you probably cant, and thats okay. If you are a beginning coder, there is a lot to learn. Sure you could memorize vocabulary words for key concepts, but there is no getting around the fact that it takes time to process the logic of writing programs and practice to make your code work. You have to start with reasonable goals, both short-term and long-term.Your short-term goals might be to work through the In troduction to jQuery section of Code Academy this week or solve two Code War challenges over the weekend. Short-term goals are incredibly important because they give you a sense of accomplishment to motivate you to complete the long-term goals. Your long-term goal might be to complete the Front End Certificate for FreeCodeCamp in 8 months with a career goal of getting your first developer job in a year. Be sure you give yourself a realistic timeframe to complete your goals. A timeframe keeps you on task, as long as it is sensible. If the Udemy course you are taking has over 40 hours of videos, an unrealistic goal is to sit at the computer for 20 hours over two days and complete it. Be Picky With the Resources You ChooseThe resources that are available to learn code are vastI just looked at a blog post that referenced over 400 free courses to take in April 2018 alone And thats a good thing. With so much variety, you can afford to be picky. Not every course or project is going to fit your needs, so dont try to force yourself into it. The result will fruchtwein likely be frustration and the feeling that you just dont have what it takes. Knowing your learning style will help you immensely. Think about how you best learn new information and always play to those strengths. People generally have a few dominant learning styles with the most common being auditory (do you listen to a lot of audio books or podcasts), verbal/linguistic (would you rather read the book instead of listen to it), visual (do you color code information, do you prefer figures and diagrams), or kinesthetic (do you learn by doing manipulating and building). If you are an auditory or verbal/linguistic learner, many resources are going to fit your needs like FreeCodeCamp, Code Academy, Udemy courses, developer podcasts. But if you are a visual or kinesthetic learner, you might need a different type of approach. For learning JavaScript, a visual learner might like Grasshopper. A kinesthetic learner might enjoy the JavaScript 30 Challenge by WesBos or Watch and Code by Gordon Zhu. Whatever your style, be sure to evaluate the resources you choose so that they meet your needs. Build Early and OftenThere is really no way around it. If you want to be a developer, you have to build. Experts say that you need to practice a skill for over 60 days consecutively in order for it to become a habit, and it takes over 10,000 hours of practice to become an expert in something. In other words, the mora you practice, the quicker you learn. The good news is, you dont have to be an expert. You just have to be able to build and troubleshoot at the beginning. Heres where goal setting is important how many hours per week or month can you realistically set aside for building? Once you have some coding basics down, you will naturally become inquisitive about how to do something on a website or application. Take those inquiries and make them a reality. One night out of curiosity, I looked up how to play audio files on a website, so I built a quick page with my top 5 list of songs to code to (here). It welches a small, manageable project that used very beginner level code and took just a couple of hours to build. Thats what is amazing about being a developer. If you can think of it, you can build it. What are you interested in besides code? Are you a dog trainer? Or a ghost hunter? Maybe a ballroom dancer? Whatever it is, you can build something around it. Youre a developerGet InvolvedMy favorite part of the Harry Potter series is that Harry is not alone. Learning magic, like code, is hard, especially when the most evil wizard of all time is trying to kill you, but Harrys friends Ron and Hermione give him strength and motivation, and eventually they defeat You-Know-Who. This makes sense from the theoretical perspective of social constructivism that we construct our knowledge through interactions with others, where each of us has strengths. Thats t he goal of most study groups to create a shared community of coders from various backgrounds with a variety of strengths. While everyone is generally working on their own projects, we happily help each other out when the need arises, and members love to collaborate on projects together. If you arent sure how to find a study group, start with some online groups and see if there is FreeCodeCamp chapter in your area. I attend their study groups regularly.Study groups are one thing. Meetups are another. My local JavaScript and Python groups have monthly meetings with guest speakers that both teach and inspire with a range of topics and projects, and the JavaScript meetings always have food which is a positiv I also attend events sponsored by WomenWhoCode. They have great workshops, code sessions, speakers, hack-a-thons, and put on a fabulous 2-day conference in the summer, and they started social events Who doesnt want to see the next big superhero movie with 50 of your tech friends? Jo in meetup.com and see whats available in your area. Contributing to these groups is the best way to overcome imposter syndrome, the feeling that you are a fraud. Final ThoughtsLets face it learning to code is hard. Its much more than a set of foreign languages - its a system of thinking, transforming that thinking into programs that work, and if you are lucky, youll have a flair for design on top of that. The journey is going to be long and frustrating at times, but you can do it. Always set reasonable goals. Evaluate resources to meet your needs. Build projects based on your inspiration. Get involved in the coding community. Most importantly, take time to reflect on how far you have come. Youre doing great. Start today Codecademy Learn to code One of the biggest challenges in almost all industries today is achieving gender parity. Gender diversity provides huge benefits in the workplace. pWhile some industries have made significant advancements in gender diversity, some industries lag further behind... and the construction industry is well-known for being in the latter category. If someone says, construction workers, youll likely picture a group of men in yellow hard hats analyzing an architects plans or laying bricks on top of a scaffold. And men at work signs only help to reinforce this image.pThis stereotype is rooted in reality. When was the last time you actually spotted a woman on a construction site? Or hired a female plumber or carpenter? Your answer is most likely never. In fact, the Bureau of Labor Statisticsreports that only 3.4% of the total of 8.3 million construction employees are women.pBut the construction industry has a lot more to offer than steel-toed boots and hard hats, and it needs women to help advance the industry in this era of rapid change. Here are 5 reasons why women joining the workforce or looking to make a pivot should consider a career in construction.h21. Fuel Innovation/h2pNot only is diversity the socially and morally right thing to do, but it is also actually an excellent business strategy. pResearch presented in the Harvard Business Reviewshows that diverse teams develop more innovative ideas. This is further supported by a study conducted by Gallupon the performance of gender-diverse teams versus single-gender teams, which found that the difference in backgrounds and perspectives led to better business performance and problem-solving. h22. Capitalize on Demand/h2pThe construction industry is currently experiencing a labor shortage. The industry itself is booming and projected to be one of the fastest-growing industries, with total spending projected to exceed $1.45 trillion in 2023/a. However, most constructio n companies are unable to meet the rising demand. pAccording to the Associated General Contractors of America/a, more than 80% of contractors are experiencing difficulties filling hourly craft positions that represent the bulk of the construction workforce.pAnd demand isnt limited to individual contributor roles. Given the industry boom, there are a number of open stable and high-paying roles (any project managers out there?) waiting for the right candidateh23. Leadership Opportunities/h2pAccording to the Bureau of Labor Statistics/a, women compose only 7.7% of the total 1 million managerial positions in construction.br/pBut given the highly collaborative nature of construction work, more women in leadership roles would help drive innovation and enhance productivity.Furthermore, as a woman in construction in a leadership position, youd have the unique opportunity to drive change for the industry and make it a more attractive option for other women.h24. High-Income Potential/h2pSalar ies for many skilled positions in construction are on the rise, making a construction career a prime choice for women looking for a high-paying job,pThe 2018 Construction Craft Salary Surveyconducted by the National Center for Construction Education and Research revealed that salaries for many skilled craft areas are increasing. Project managers and project supervisors topped the list at $92,523 and $88,355, respectively. The next set of highest-paying jobs include those of kofferverstrker welders ($71,067), instrumentation technicians ($70,080), pipe welders ($69,222), power line workers ($68,262) and industrial electricians ($67,269). Of the 32 categories of workers in the survey, 19 positions earned an average salary of $60,000 or higher.h25. Sense of accomplishment/h2p The construction industry can give employees a unique sense of achievement. Yes, the job is stressful and the work can be demanding, but nothing beats the feeling of being able to build something from the ground u p. pHow many professionals in other industries can point at a school, a hospital, or a skyscraper and say I helped build that?pThe construction industry has a long way to go in combating gender bias and supporting women in the workforce, but given the current demand for workers, theres no better time to pick up a sledgehammer (figurative or literal) and smash the gender stereotypes plaguing the construction industry.

She smiled unconvincingly, insisting things were fundamentally fine. âIâve just hit a bunch of low potential prospects in a row, Iâm sure this coming month will be better.âYou scratch your head, brows furrowed. You ponder strategies to re-ignite Janeâs energy on your end-of-week commute home. Then resume your internal dialogue while on your evening jog. Is Jane disappointed in your recent sales territory assignments? Maybe she views them as reducing her autonomy or opportunities? While pushing your daughter on her swingset over the weekend, you wonder if you should have given Jane that raise last month, after all. Monday, you ask your colleague Mary over lunch what S HE does in such cases â" what are her favorite motivational tactics? In short, you pull your hair out trying to âreadâ Jane, her current issues, and what it might take to light a fire under her again. The Telepathy GameThis scenario plays itself out over and over again each day across corporate America. Well-meaning managers play what I like to call The Telepathy Game. In the absence of hard data on what motivates employees like Jane or an ability to crawl inside their hearts and minds to find out first-hand, these managers often default to the Golden Rule. Motivate othersâ¦as youâd like to be motivated yourself. But the well-meaning, kindergarten-taught Golden Rule often fails us. A de-motivated employee is likely suffering from a perceived loss of âwhat matters mostâ to them about their work and life. And âwhat matters mostâ can be startlingly different from one person to the next. So, do I just ask?Is it as easy, then, as STOPPING this crazy guessing game, and asking Jane âhey, what really matters most to you at work?âIn reality, no. That question is too theoretical, too out-of-left-field, and may involve answers Jane is reticent to articulate on the spot, such as âAll I want is that extra $10,000â or âAll I want is a manager who gives me space - youâre micromanaging me unnecessarily.âMy favorite tactic to sleuth out key motivators is a written exercise that can be done with your whole team OR with an individual - perhaps as she or he first joins your team. (Ideally before âlow motivationâ crises arise, but if not â" after.)One effective approach: The rank-ordered listStep 1: Make a typed list of 12-15 things that could conceivably âmatter mostâ to individuals as they reflect on all managers theyâve worked for over the course of their (short or long) careers. Here are 6 items to get you started:I am MOST motivated and happy when a managerâ¦__________ expresses genuine appreciation for my ideas and contributions_______ ___ provides me with independence and autonomy__________ is approachable, open, and listens well__________ supports a healthy work/life balance__________ helps me reach the compensation outcomes I desire__________ gives me lots of opportunities to learn new thingsStep 2: Ask a direct report to RANK ORDER all 12 or 15 items in order of importance to them. Remind them this exercise is about what they have found motivating based on experiences with ALL the managers theyâve experienced (even including that guy who ran the pool where they were a lifeguard!). If there are 15 items on your list, each number from 1 to 15 must be placed in front of one item. #1 is the thing that matters MOST to someone at work, #2 is the next most important thing. #15 might matter too, but it is the least important of all items on your list.Step 3: Meet 1-on-1 with each surveyed employee to discuss their rank-ordered items. Let them know you want to be the best manager possible for them, which means hearin g more about the things that matter most to them on the job, and about past experiences that may have shaped these preferences. Ask lots of curious, open-ended questions.Prepare for surprisesI share a survey like this containing 17 items with participants in my leadership development programs; they love to use this tool to climb inside the heads of their direct reports. Most years, I aggregate data from their 500+ surveyed employees on âwhat matters mostâ. Surprisingly to some, financial compensation is rarely listed among the top 5 motivators. Many leaders are taken off guard by what DOES float to the top of their employeesâ lists of motivators. Post-survey 1:1 discussions open up rich new topics and forms of communication. But back to Jane. Do you really want to fight for that $10,000 raise for her, when what Jane REALLY suffers from is a perceived loss of work/life balance? Your best âtelepathyâ skills may not pick up the true source of her frustration. Turns out that Ja neâs son is now two and wants to see his mom more nights before his 7 pm bedtime. Jane is beginning to suspect that this jobâs long hours and long commute may be incompatible with her goal to be the best parent possible.Play the Telepathy Game at your own risk when it comes to understanding motivators. It leads too frequently to the wrong conversations or action steps. With the war for talent so fierce and the loss of a strong performer so expensive, stop guessing. Proactively discover what each team member really cares about, and work to address it. Before itâs too late.

Recession Proof Jobs to Withstand an Economic Slowdown
Recession Proof Jobs to Withstand an Economic Slowdown Recession Proof Jobs to Withstand an Economic Slowdown From December 2007 through June 2009, the United States suffered through what economists termed The Great Recession. Unemployment rose from 5% to 9.5% during that period and even reached 10% in the months following. The long-term unemployment rate- unemployment lasting for at least 27 weeks- was at an all-time high (U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics. BLS Spotlight on Statistics: The Recession of 2007-2009. February 2012). The Great Recession of 2008 was the 10th recession to strike this country since 1948. With 10 such events in about 60 years, these economic slowdowns, unfortunately, arent all that unusual. With an abundance of horror stories of people losing their jobs and taking a long time to recover, you may be thinking it would be wise to look at recession-proof jobs. History has shown us that while recessions typically impact some job sectors more than others, each one is different. An industry that remained unscathed during previous slowdowns can be decimated by the next one. No occupation is guaranteed to withstand an economic downturn, but some are more stable than others. Typically, jobs that are vital to the functioning of society fare best during difficult times. The following careers are as close to recession-proof as possible. The need for people to work in these occupations typically remains steady even during economic downturns. The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics predicts they will have job growth that is at least as fast as the average for all occupations (increase 5% to 9%) between 2016 and 2026. The government agency predicts some of them will even have faster growth (an increase of 10% to 14%) or much faster growth (14% or more). 1. Job Search Hacks for Better Results
Job Search Hacks for Better Results Job Search Hacks for Better Results 1 Try out some of these job search hacks for better results, time savings, and increased productivity! Treat your job search like a job. Ask anyone whoâs been job hunting for a long time and theyâll probably tell you that searching for a job can feel like a job in and of itself. So make that work to your advantage by showing up for your job search every day like it is your real job. Wake up each morning with a positive attitude, eat well, and, most importantly, get dressed. (It can put you in the right frame of mind to find a job!) Dress like youâre getting ready for work, because in effect, you are. Create a master resume and cover letter. Although this task can initially be time-consuming, in the end, having a master resume and cover letter can be a big time-saver. Create a resume that includes your most important and recent work experience, education, experience, and skills that you would need to impress a potential employer. Then, as you find jobs youâd like to apply for, all you need to do is tailor your master resume to fit the job descriptions. The same goes for your cover letter, too. Write a strong cover letter that explains what type of job youâre looking for, how your past work experience and education makes you a solid candidate for the job, and then modify it for each job that you apply for. Bookmark your sites. Letâs say that you look at a variety of sites to help enhance your job search, such as LinkedIn and industry leadersâ Twitter profiles. In an effort to expedite your search, bookmark the sites that you use daily, and store your logins and passwords on your computer or phone. It can save you some time from having to log in and search those same sites. And be sure to stick to sites that are going to help you find a job- no social media surfing allowed- to maintain momentum in your job search. Read job listings well. Sure, your eyes can glaze over from scanning job listing after job listing. But not taking the time to read a job description well can cost you precious time and lost productivity. Remember, if you donât fill out all of the criteria on a job application, your information could get rejected by an applicant tracking system. Again, spending a little more time crafting a quality application (including editing your cover letter and resume) could equal getting a call from a hiring manager to come in for an interview. Be choosy. When it comes to job searching, more isnât always better. If you dash off 20 mediocre job applications each day, for example, chances are you might not hear back from an employer. A better alternative is to apply to positions that you really want, not ones that you feel half-heartedly about. If youâre excited about the job, your enthusiasm will shine through in your job application, which will impress potential employers. Donât try to multitask. If you think that having multiple windows open while working on your resume and trying to talk to a recruiter all at the same time is a good idea, think again. Too often when people try to multitask, the things that theyâre working on arenât of the best quality. Job searching requires focus and effort, so youâll get much better results if you pay attention to one task at a time- and complete it well- rather than trying to do too much. Make a list. Never underestimate the power of a list! For job seekers, a list can be your job search best friend. Not only can it keep you focused, but it can also give you a strong sense of accomplishment when you complete each item. But bear in mind a list only works when it has a few key components on it. When you put too many to doâs on your list, youâll wind up feeling frustrated and overwhelmed. So think about two or three key tasks that youâd like to complete each day and write those down. By the end of the week, youâll be amazed at your job search progress! Know someone looking for a job? Refer a friend to with this link- youâll get a month free service and theyâll get 30% off!

5 things you should never say when asking for a raise
5 things you should never say when asking for a raise 5 things you should never say when asking for a raise Before you subscribe to the notion you can only inquire about more zeros on your paychecks once a year in review season, remember âtis always the season to negotiate your net worth. Especially in times of great stress or change, where the job description you were hired to meet is just a mere bullet point in your current list of responsibilities, taking the step to discuss your salary is encouraged. But even more important than standing up for your career and the finances youâve (more than) earned, approaching the conversation in a professional, yet steadfast, manner can make-or-break your employerâs reaction to your request. In fact, career experts argue the specific phrases and words you select when setting up this sometimes-tense meeting with your manager is the most important aspect of asking for a raise.âThe language that you choose has a direct impact on the way that your boss will receive and interpret your message,â explains Amy Cooper Hakim, Ph.D., an industrial-orga nizational psychology practitioner and workplace expert says. âYou should be assertive without coming off as cocky or self-serving as you share the specific reasons why you are worthy of the increase.âHere, Hakim shares her professional insights on what you should avoid when making your case for a higher pay grade:âI want a raise.â (Period)There are plenty of givens in a working environment: you have a boss, you might have a direct-report. You will have a place to settle in daily, whether a shared, open area, an office or a cubicle. Youâll have goals to meet and projects to complete. And at some point, the finances you agreed to on your offer letter will feel too low compared to your output.Hakim says itâs never a surprise to a manager - at any level - that an employee would ask for a raise. As an expected trajectory in any career, moving up the so-called corporate ladder, responding to inquiries for raises is part of your bossâs role. Thatâs why simply stating tha t youâd like a raise is a no-no. Much like stating the obvious, your higher-ups know everyone would appreciate more cold-hard cash, but it has to be hard-earned, too.âIt is your job to share why it is of benefit for the boss and for the company for him or her to give you a raise,â she says. This doesnât mean you should spew off a laundry list to back up your argument, complete with a dissertation, but rather, Hakim says to have a clear, to-the-point case for yourself that you can present in person. In addition to language you use, having proof in the form of percentage change or growth can help sway your boss to step up to bat for you with their chief.âErika got a raise, so I thoughtâ¦âIf you work in an environment where many of your colleagues have the same amount of experience you do, itâs probably likely youâll discuss your salaries at some point. Or, someone will begin a wildfire rumor that a water cooler chat canât extinguish. This can make jealousy run rapid, especially if someone on your team was granted a raise - and you werenât -- and you feel their contribution isnât as great. As tempting as it is to call your manager out on what you deem a mistake or an insight on your performance, Hakim says to keep the raise conversation about you - and only you.âRecognize that everyone has different circumstances and different levels of performance. When speaking with your boss, do not compare yourself to others. Rather, focus on your own accomplishments and dedication to the team and company,â she shares.âIf you donât give me a raise, Iâm quitting.âInstead of explaining in detail the myriad of examples that showcase your abilities and accomplishments at your company, it might seem tempting to take a slightly more aggressive route and pose a threat instead of a talking point.Hakim has one word for that route: DONâT.Hakim says never ever give your employe an ultimatum unless youâre prepared for any outcome, including one th at ends with an early ticket to happy hour, sans employment. When you play hardball, Hakim says you could be let go or arguably even worse, you keep your job with a boss who now resents your attitude, passes you over for every promotion and wonât be a positive reference for your next gig.Instead, express how important the raise and recognition are to your future at the company and your continued dedication to meeting both your companyâs goals and your unique professional timeline. Hakim suggests this approach, âBoss, I like to keep my work life and personal life separate, but suffice it to say, a raise would truly help me toâ¦.ââYou need me.âRepeat after Hakim when she says, every person in a company is replaceable, even the CEO. So even if you tend to feel like you expertly manage relationships with marketing, technology, customer service and the executives, going into the raise chat deeming yourself a mandatory part of the company likely wonât end in your favor.âD onât forget that a humble, team-focused demeanor will get you much further than will a cocky attitude. Rather, share how much you enjoy working on the bossâs team,â she says. This is where the compliment sandwich mentality you learned ages ago will come in handy, as Hakim suggest starting out your speech with, âBoss, I truly appreciate the way that we work together to get the job done. I feel proud to be the team lead and am thrilled that we hit our numbers early this quarterâ¦âWrite it in an emailFacing confrontation, whether it be with a wishy-washy client, a disingenuous college or a selfish friend is part of life. More likely than not, asking for a raise will make your heart race, your palms sweat and possibly, produce unfounded doubt that could cause you to chicken out. For sure, an easier way to request a raise is to type it out in an e-mail, requiring no face-to-face conversation, but Hakim says itâs a grim mistake to make if youâre truly seeking recognition and reward for your work.âThe reason for in-person dialogue is because when interacting one-on-one, you can rely on social cues to note verbal and nonverbal reactions to your message. If your boss just reads your written message, then she may place different intonation or emphasis on certain words, and may not grasp the true intent of your writing,â she says.

ethics and your resume
ethics and your resume ethics and your resume A reader writes: I saw this post from Randy Cohen (formerly the author of The New York Times Ethicist column) on Facebook this morning: A tougher one I received at the column: may a job hunter omit a Ph.D. [on his resume] lest a potential employer find him overqualified? No. Some things are not an employerâs business â" your religion or erotic proclivities or Facebook password. But a CV is meant to be a full account of your education and work history. I commented, making the argument you make about a resume being a marketing document designed to present the potential employee in the best light. To which he responded: You may be selective, of course, or some resumes would be 50 pages long, but you may not be deceptive, deliberately concealing work or education history that a potential employer has a legitimate right to know. I commented again with some (made-up) practical examples: What if I have an MFA and am applying for a job in finance? What if I temped while I was unemployed? No response (as of now) from Mr. Cohen. so what do you think of this? Do you and he just disagree, or is it that youre coming at the question from different angles (you as a manager, he as an ethicist)? Or maybe, in some cases, circumstances trump ethics (and in others, ethics trump circumstances)? Anyway, I was just interested in your thoughts on this. First let me say that I really liked Randy Cohens Ethicist column and was disappointed when it ended! However, I think he got this one wrong. An employer is no more entitled to a comprehensive accounting of your past than anyone else is. Your job as a candidate is to explain what in your past has prepared you to and demonstrates that you will do the job well to say here are the reasons I would excel at this job. Thats what it means to apply for a job; youre saying heres why Id be the right fit. And everyone is basically agreed that this is the nature of a resume; its designed to show what you bring to the table. No one expects it to provide details of irrelevant coursework, or the project you worked on that almost ruined your company, or the fact that you were planning to go into the priesthood before you switched to medicine. (In fact, youd be judged negatively for including those first two youd be seen as someone who couldnt identify what is and isnt appropriate information.) And Im not sure where Randy is coming from with this concept of an employers legitimate right to know everything in your past. Employers have a legitimate right to expect that youre not lying (and an obligation to do their own due diligence on you, in the form of reference checks, etc.), but they dont have any special right to receive every detail about your education and work history on a silver platter, unless you choose to base your candidacy on those. Overall, I think his response reflects a slightly off-base understanding of what we, as a society, have agreed a resume is and even what employers want/expect from a resume. (Which is a reason that I wish non-workplace advice columnists wouldnt venture into workplace advice. It often results in weirdness.)

Sometimes bad ideas can be incredibly useful
Sometimes bad ideas can be incredibly useful Sometimes bad ideas can be incredibly useful Mark Tigan, civil servant of the village of Winooski, Vermont, was thirty-two years old when the president of the United States called to shut him down. This was 1979. Tigan was a bit of a wunderkind in the field of small-town city planning. He was currently responsible for leading Winooskiâs staff of city planners to try to boost its struggling economy.Follow Ladders on Flipboard!Follow Laddersâ magazines on Flipboard covering Happiness, Productivity, Job Satisfaction, Neuroscience, and more! With a population of seven thousand, Winooski was a blip on the map, overshadowed by its neighbor, Burlington. Its downtown district, next to a handful of abandoned mills and factories, was crumbling. And it was cold- temperatures regularly reached twenty below. The world outside was facing an industrial crisis of its own. Iran was in the middle of a revolution, causing, among other things, global oil prices to double. The cost to heat Winooski had risen to $4 million a year- $14.2 million in 2018 dollars.Burlington had just put in a request for government funds to build a hydroelectric plant along the river to help reduce its own heating bill and subsequently leave Winooskiâs creek bed dry. With already high unemployment and declining commerce, Winooskiâs downtown would be ruined.Amid this turmoil, Tigan took his staff out for a drink and a chat about how his city planning office could help their struggling town. After a few drinks and complaints about the temperature, Tigan came up with the bad idea of a lifetime.âWhat if we built a dome over the city?âEveryone was tipsy by then. They all thought it was a good plan. It could save oil costs and lower heating expenses.A week later, Tigan stopped in Baltimore on his way to Washington, DC. There he told his dome idea to a buddy who worked as a liaison between Congress and the Department of Housing and Urban Development. âYou know . . . ,â his friend said. âThe assistant secretary, Bob Embry, loves domes.â D ome houses had become briefly popular during the â60s and â70s for their energy efficiency and structural integrity. By this time, however, dome fever had faded, except among a few diehards like Embry.Tigan replaced his friend in a carpool with Embry and two other HUD people to Washington the next day and pitched Assistant Secretary Embry his idea to build the dome.Surprisingly, Embry said heâd fund it. Tigan delivered the news to his flabbergasted staff. They eagerly put together a report and proposal. The dome story blew up. The day after the Burlington newspaper wrote about that council meeting, three television trucks showed up to Winooski City Hall. National newspapers followed. Eventually, an International Dome Symposium was scheduled in Winooski. The Vermonters had few answers for the inevitable questions. They made up specifics on the fly. Nobody had built a dome this big before. Nobody knew what it would be made out of. But, it soon became clear that building and mainta ining a dome large enough to fit Winooski, engineered to keep the heat in and not kill everyone, would probably cost a lot more than the heating bill savings it would generate and ruin the view. Then, some observers in the Middle East started to panic about how America was putting cities under domes in order to stick it to the oil industry. HUD assistant secretary Embryâs phone rang.âWhat the hell are you doing?âIt was President Carter. He was running a tough election campaign against Ronald Reagan. International ridicule about the federal government paying millions to cover towns in Vermont with domes was not helping. The conversation, according to Tigan, ended with a presidential order: âYouâve got to pull this.âCognitive diversity- diversity of ideas and viewpoints- can be powerful and is often what we need to get a team thinking critically. But the Winooski Dome story is a reminder of an important reality: someâdifferentâ ideas, frankly, are quite bad.Any perspect ive- even one that might seem crazy- has the potential to be useful under the right circumstances. But that doesnât mean that it will be. How can a team or its leaders discern when it should seriously consider a different way of thinking, and when itâs a waste of time? The perspective of a young activist whoâd had a few drinks was unfortunately not one that could help cold old Winooski with its heat trouble and battle over its river. Thirty-two-year-old eco-warrior Mark Tiganâs cognitive diversity was just a little too far-out to be of any use.Or was it?A series of research studies from the University of Leuven in Belgium points us toward an answer. The Belgian researchers organized several group brainstorming sessions where eight participants were put in rooms together and asked to write down, discuss, and sketch out good ideas for either mobile phone games or for a mobile payment app. Then came the twist. In the different sessions, the researchers added various âinspirati onal materialâ to get things going. Sometimes the inspiration was straightforward, like an idea for a prepaid credit card to use with the app. Other times, the researchers showed the group bad ideas. One was a bracelet that physically injures you if you spend too much money on the mobile app.Other times, the researchers included wacky characters in the group exercise, like a washed-up actor named Patrik who had been abandoned by his wife and kids, leaving him with a lazy, incontinent dog.Surprisingly, when the brainstorm groups in the Belgium study were given bad ideas like the injury bracelet, or crazy âcollaboratorsâ like Patrik, they came up with better ideas than they would have otherwise- together or alone. The bad ideas helped point them toward ideas that they wouldnât have considered before. This is the lesson, it turns out, all those news trucks would have learned if they had stuck around Winooski a little bit longer. The last thing the world heard about Winooski after President Carter ordered the kibosh on Mark Tiganâs domeâ¦was nothing. But that dome that was never built helped save Winooski.Embry told Tigan he couldnât give them funding for the dome. But he knew about Burlingtonâs proposal to build a hydroelectric plant on the river and wanted to give federal funding to Winooski to build a hydro plant on a different part of the river that could power the area without ruining Winooskiâs downtown. The enthusiasm around the dome- inventors and politicians flying in to talk about it- had ignited the town and its supporters, key among them Embry. Soon, ideas that had before gone unconsidered were not so easily dismissed anymore. They built the hydroelectric plant, which helped Winooski save on its heating costs without ruining downtown or causing a war with Burlington. They used some of the HUD funding to convert the old factories into energy-efficient office spaces that helped attract local businesses to the town.Even though the dome was a rather extreme- we might even say awful- idea, it ended up being useful after all. Sometimes bad ideas can be useful, if anything, because a bad idea can be very good at pointing us in a new direction. The scientific term for this is âerror-allowing heuristics.â The idea, as Dr. Scott Page of the University of Michigan explains, is that âsometimes, a new solution of lower value can point the way to a better solution.âThis is important enough to say twice. Sometimes a solution of lower value can point the way to a better solution. To see how, letâs return to the Belgian researchersâ bad ideas. Another key reason the Belgian studies with Patrik worked so well has to do with breaking organizational silence. Often we have ideas that we consciously or subconsciously suppress because they fall outside what our group might deem normal. The brainstorm exercises that inject bad ideas, in a nutshell, increase the odds that weâll break our silence with an idea that would normally feel unsafe to express, because someone has already expressed something even more far out.Thereâs a subtlety to this idea thatâs also important. The Winooski dome didnât force anyoneâs hand. Instead, it was when someone willingly paid attention to a seemingly crazy idea that new possibilities opened up and progress was made.We might call this phenomenon âcognitive expansion.â In essence, cognitive expansion happens when we add cognitively diverse people to our team and pay attention to them. And it turns out that the more divergent our perspectives, the more potentially interesting ideas will come up.By definition, itâs a willingness to explore things that might not be useful. But curiosity is considered a virtue because this act of exploration is often useful regardless.Similar research by Dr. Charlan Nemeth, a professor of psychology at the University of California, Berkeley, shows that even if a minority perspective happens to be wrong, it can still help the group find better ideas. The key? The group must be willing to pay attention. Considering such a radical idea opened Winooski and its supporters (like HUD) up to considering more workable solutions to its problems that might not have happened otherwise, causing unemployment in Winooski to decrease from 15 percent to 7 percent.Seemingly bad ideas like the Winooski Dome arenât always going to end up pointing us toward useful things. But Malevich and Tigan show us just how important it is for us to seriously consider perspectives outside our norm. Thatâs how regular teams become Dream Teams. This article first appeared on Linkedin. My Engineers Notebook Bridget Knight Brown
My Engineerâs Notebook Bridget Knight Brown My Engineerâs Notebook Bridget Knight Brown My Engineerâs Notebook: Bridget Knight Brown ASME member Bridget Knight Brown, P.E., is a member of the 2015-2016 class of the ASME Early Career Leadership Intern Program to Serve Engineering (ECLIPSE) program. ECLIPSE offers early career engineers the opportunity to further their professional and volunteer development by working alongside senior-level ASME officers from the Societys various units. Bridget, who is currently serving as an ECLIPSE intern with ASMEs Technical Events and Content (TEC) Sector, is an energy budget analyst at Southern Company Services in Birmingham, Ala. Before accepting that position in 2013, she served for two years at the company as an in-service testing program owner, overseeing the in-service testing of pumps and valves for Southern Companys three nuclear plants. During that time she also served as a member of ASMEs New Reactors Operations and Maintenance Committee Task Group. Prior to joining Southern Company, Bridget worked for seven years at United Space Alliance as staff engineer, eventually serving several of those years as a flight controller performing day-of-launch support for the NASA Space Shuttle program. She received a bachelors degree in mechanical engineering from the University of Mississippi in 2004, and an M.B.A. from the University of Houston-Clear Lake in 2007. She is a registered Professional Engineer in the state of Texas. Bridget Knight Brown Whats inside your engineers notebook? The most important things in my notebook are notes where I have recapped how I solved an issue. I have learned that, nine times out of ten, the same or a similar issue will come up sometime in the future. It is always a relief to think been there, done that, pull out my notes, and quickly tackle that repeat problem. Whose notebook would you most like to peek into? Why? I would like to peek into the notebook of a good computer programmer. Its always good to have a stash of great source code to synthesize large amounts of data so that I can get to the fun part - analyzing. How and when did you know you wanted to become an engineer? A family friend encouraged me to be a mechanical engineer. I made the final decision in high school. I thought that it would best fit my love of challenges and applying math. Engineering was a hot topic amongst my fellow classmates. A lot of us looked forward to majoring in engineering. In a photo from her time as a flight controller with United Space Alliance, Bridget Knight Brown performs Day of Launch support tasks at the Mission Control Center. What's the most exciting project you've ever worked on? My most exciting project was supporting the launch of Space Shuttle mission STS-125, which serviced the Hubble Space Telescope. All of us who worked on the project understood that this was a very unique mission and focused on every piece of input. As I viewed the launch from one of the big screens in the Mission Control Center, I was practically holding my breath. STS-125 was a success that we all were very proud of. What do you think youd be doing if you hadnt become an engineer? If I had not become an engineer, I would have aimed to be a teacher. I would be proving to students that math and science are not difficult, mysterious subjects. I would let them know that making contributions in engineering is a great way to leave a legacy that will enable people to live more efficiently and safely. Whats your favorite activity when youre not working? My hobby is genealogy. I am the historian for my dads side of the family. So far, weve traced our ancestors back to 1799. This accounts for approximately 500 family members. 2015-2016 ECLIPSE interns (left to right): Ankush Gupta, Sara Wheeland, Bridget Knight Brown, Manesh Nair and Jiten Patel. Was there a book or a movie that piqued your interest in science or inspired you to become an engineer? All of my math textbooks inspired me to become an engineer. My math books did not get much locker time; I didnt mind carrying them wherever I went. Who are your heroes, either within the engineering profession or in the rest of your life? My heroes are my family. Their genuine support in all aspects of my life means the world to me. The things that they do in their careers and personal lives encourage me to continue striving to do more and more. Whats the most meaningful or rewarding aspect of being connected to engineering? My connection to engineering provides an avenue to improve the quality of life and to protect society. My engineering career has allowed to me to take part in meaningful projects such as simulating the economic generation of electricity for years to come, ensuring that pumps and valves in nuclear plants are tested in a manner that safeguards the public, and ensuring that space shuttle launches were safe for the crew. What does ASME mean to you? I am proud to be a part of the camaraderie of ASME. ASME is an organization where I both learn from others and share my experiences. I gain valuable insights every time I attend an ASME event. Everyone eagerly shares knowledge and perspectives, which I later use to resolve issues in my everyday work life. I enjoy working with fellow ASME members whose goals are to solve engineering problems around the world and to encourage the development of future engineers who will do the same.I am proud to be a part of the camaraderie of ASME. ⦠I enjoy working with fellow ASME members whose goals are to solve engineering problems around the world and to encourage the development of future engineers who will do the same.Bridget Knight Brown

5 surprising reasons you need to listen to your anger
5 surprising reasons you need to listen to your anger 5 surprising reasons you need to listen to your anger I sat and listened to an elderly couple tell me how theyâd been approached by a financial advisor who persuaded them to invest their life savings in a Ponzi scheme guaranteed to produce a 50% return on investment within 6 months. I was the FBI agent they contacted when they could no longer reach the financial advisor to retrieve their money. The financial advisor was a scam artist who had emptied the elderly coupleâs bank account.I was angry and my investigation soon morphed into a personal vendetta against the man. The scam artist was eventually caught, in another state, so I didnât have the satisfaction of slapping handcuffs on the bast*rd myself. Alas, all the money he had stolen was gone and I was left with the sad job of informing the elderly couple that their life savings were gone and couldnât be recovered. Yes, I was angry.Follow Ladders on Flipboard!Follow Laddersâ magazines on Flipboard covering Happiness, Productivity, Job Satisfaction, Neuroscience, and more! A s Federal law enforcement, FBI agents are expected to control emotions as they conduct investigations in a fair and efficient manner. Often, itâs impossible to look the victim of a crime in the face and not feel anger toward the person who caused the pain. How many times have you heard, Every time you get angry, you poison your own system. This thinking is akin to putting a bandaid on cancer. It doesnât create the deep healing thatâs needed when we feel anger, frustration, or envy.Yes, these are negative emotions but the real problem isnât that we experience them. The real problem rears its ugly head when weâre taught to suppress or avoid them at all cost. What if anger is good for you? Remember, it surfaces for a reason. Here are 5 surprising reasons you need to listen to your anger:1. Anger can give you balanceBalance in our personal and professional life provides a perspective that can help us make better decisions. It enables us to see the entire map so we can see where weâve been as well as where we hope to go in the future. The same is true of emotional balance. The ability to suppress our anger is not a sign we are emotionally healthy. We can pretend that all is good but that does nothing more than keep an emotion from getting out. And guess what? When you fight a feeling, it only gets stronger.Research shows that bereaved people who make the most effort to avoid feeling grief or anger take the longest to recover from their loss. When we suppress or avoid a negative emotion like anger, our ability to experience positive feelings also goes down. Stress soars and our amygdala, a part of the brain associated with emotions, begins to work overtime.Research in emotional regulation by neuroscientist Matthew Lieberman at UCLA shows that when we put negative feelings into words, our amygdala calms down. People who openly express their feelings are healthier than those who suppress emotions like anger. How To Make It Work For You: Talk your situation over with a friend. The more you express your anger in words, the calmer you will become. Or, write it down in a journal if you prefer. The essential point is this: when you put your anger into words, either verbal or written, itâs therapeutic. Remember to notice when the venting is always about the same topic. At that point, you need to delve deeper into the real problem behind your anger.2. Anger is meant to make us feel uncomfortableWe live in a society driven by the pleasure principleâ"â"there is such an emphasis on positivity that we are unequipped to deal with the other half of our emotional spectrum. If thereâs a feeling we donât like, we try to get rid of it or pretend it doesnât exist. Our continual pursuit of empty happiness cliches seldom register anything more than a temporary bleep, and then quickly fade away.Anger makes us uncomfortable and thatâs a good thing because it gets our attention. An emotion like anger requires us to sit up and pay attention if we hope to get to the root of it. To fully experience and tap into the wisdom of our emotions, we must learn how to experience discomfort. Without discomfort, there is no change and no growth.Research shows that people who prefer to feel useful emotions, even when they are unpleasant, are better able to use them in ways that are strategic. People who prefer to feel anger when confronting others tend to be higher in emotional intelligence, whereas people who prefer to feel happiness in such contexts tend to be lower in emotional intelligence. Negative Emotions + Positive Emotions = Emotional Competence How To Make It Work For You: Mental toughness allows us to tap into the wisdom of our emotions. Our limbic brain system alerts us to danger in our environment. If we choke off all negative emotions, we also suppress a primal survival tool that has alerted us to threats in our environment for centuries. All emotions can be useful; the key is to regulate them so you can choose the situations which are more beneficial to you.3. Anger helps you discover your boundariesAre there situations or people that always twist your stomach into a knot? Me too.I was early for a supervisorâs conference and took a seat; then Earl showed up and sat down beside me. I was angry. Earl followed me around like a puppy dog. If I told him to get lost, it would create a very unpleasant environment. On the other hand, I knew my anger would only increase if I sat beside him for the entire two-hour conference.Earl had crossed acceptable boundaries so I decided to modify my situation- I got up, excused myself, and left the room. I chatted with people in the hallway for five minutes and I came back in. Sure enough, someone else had taken my seat next to Earl and I found another one across the room.Recent research suggests that people who do not take steps to modify their situation only compound their problems. If they learn how to reframe their circumstances, they are better able to control their anger and other negative emotions. When you imagine an event as though youâre a bystander, you will notice that you harbor fewer aggressive and negative emotionsHow To Make It Work For You: Itâs not always possible to turn away from disturbing or unfavorable situations. Some events- the loss of your job, the death of a partner, or an unexpected illness- are not controllable. Studies have found that people can cope with unwanted emotions if they imagine the situation as an impartial observer. Find ways to modify your response- so you can control your anger before it spills out and make matte rs worse.4. Anger can motivate usAre you angry because you got passed over a promotion? Use that anger to propel you toward a job that will provide more rewards. Are you angry because thereâs income inequality in this country? Let that anger motivate you to become more involved in local government.Anger is an interesting emotion. While itâs a negative feeling, neuroscientists have discovered that it arouses cognitive and behavior responses that are often positive. Anger can motivate a response normally associated with positive behavior. If we look at anger like any other emotion, we can finds ways to anticipate its arrival and chose how long it hangs around. Consider a positive emotion like joy: if we excavate our own mind and body, we know what will produce joy for us. We create circumstances that will encourage or enhance our experience. We anticipate its arrival so weâre not surprised when it shows up.If weâve done our homework, we can find ways to anticipate the arrival of anger and chose how long it should hang around as well. How To Make It Work For You: When it comes to anger, itâs important to explore in the depths of your mind to uncover what provoked it. The exploration of your anger requires as much honesty and self-awareness as it takes to explore what brings you joy. Both emotions, and your response to them, work hand in hand to form a healthy and mature connections.5. Anger can strengthen relationshipsMost psychologists and therapists would agree that conflicts and disagreements allow you to learn more about your partner, spouse, child, friend, or associate. Equality in relationships means you work through tough things together. It allows you to see things from the other personâs point of viewWhen youâre afraid of showing your anger, you signal that youâre not willing to honestly admit your emotions. As a result, you stay away from people or experiences that might conjure up all unwanted emotions.Neuroscientist Richard Davidson o bserves that anger can rise within a matter of seconds. We need to acknowledge the anger we feel, and then find a way to let it naturally dissipate. If you get angry, ask yourself why you feel that way. Once you can find the source of your anger, you can turn it into something positive. Itâs important to sit with your anger and listen to it. If you quit because it makes you uncomfortable, youâll never excavate the origin of your emotion. On the other hand, you need to control your anger so it doesnât control you. Donât let anger turn into rage that leads to destructive behavior. When we let our emotions take control, we become a victim of our circumstances- LaRae Quy How To Make It Work For You: Itâs never a good idea to vent your anger. According to the Handbook of Emotion Regulation, venting anger doesnât reduce it; venting intensifies the emotion so that your anger begins to snowball. Instead, share your feelings with others in a constructive way. This article originally appeared on LaRae Quy.You might also enjoy⦠New neuroscience reveals 4 rituals that will make you happy Strangers know your social class in the first seven words you say, study finds 10 lessons from Benjamin Franklinâs daily schedule that will double your productivity The worst mistakes you can make in an interview, according to 12 CEOs 10 habits of mentally strong people
